In February 2016, alongside The Good Chance Theatre and Help Refugees, a unique Letters Live took place in the “Jungle” refugee camp on the outskirts of Calais.
Two days before French authorities were due to demolish the camp and the various community centres therein that provide shelter, support, joy and sanctuary to many of the refugees, particularly children, who reside there, a one-off Letters Live took place in the Good Chance theatre, a structure created and staffed by two playwrights and all-round human dynamos, Joe and Joe.
Alongside artists residing in the camp, the event saw letters read by Jude Law, Tom Stoppard, Dame Harriet Walter, Matt Berry, Shappi Khorsandi, and Toby Jones, with music performed by Tom Odell.
We were honoured to be a part of this extraordinary event and it served to strengthen our conviction that as humans sharing space on the same planet, we have a duty to help however possible in this ever-evolving humanitarian crisis.
